The settlement of the Mülsengrund started in the 12th century. Situated picturesquely in a little valley, the community stretches along the Mülsenbach, past lovely countryside and old half-timbered houses. In 1999 the villages Neuschönburg, Marienau, Ortmannsdorf, Mülsen St. Niclas. Mülsen St. Jacob, Mülsen St. Micheln, Stangendorf, Thurm, Niedermülsen, Wulm and Berthelsdorf were combined to 'Saxony's largest community'. The communityMülsen has today a population of ca 12.700 people in an area ofnearly 5000km².

The brook Mülsen (Milsena) has its name probably from the Latin syllable 'mil', in the sense of milling or grinding, which points to the past usage of mill wheels driven by ditch systems. Today some weirs and names like Claus-Mill, Hammer-Mill or Wilde-Mill testify to this trade. Afterthe devastating floodof2002 the brook has been so far restored that it has even trout swim in there again.

Every year on the 2nd May Sunday a cyclists Sunday is being organised. Over 20000 cyclists, among them prominent people like Georg Milbradt cycle the 23km long distance fromNeuschönburgto Dennheritz. At this event many museums and landmarksinvite sightseeing. So also the Härtelhaus where one can see a weaving mill and local history or the Agrarhistorischer Hof where one can get information about settlement, generation contracts and farm work.
