Museum of Castle Stein

Castle Stein soars picturesquely on a steep cliff at the bank of the Zwickau Mulde. Stein is considered as one of the most charming and interesting castles in the land of Saxony because only very few fortifications have kept their original countenance in such a rate.

Built around 1200, Castle Stein protected the mastery centre Hartenstein and secured a river crossing. Exploiting the territory situation a high-up castle on rock with alower castle in front was created is a kind of moated castle.

The tower crowned upper castle has been housing the urban museum with its historical collectionsfor nearly 50 years. The castle museum offers its visitors thevery special service of a professional guided tour during a walk-about through the fortification and living quarters. The medieval housing and living conditions on a castle of the lower nobility are being depicted realistically and understandable.
